Steering Committee

Members

The SGAC Steering Committee (SC) is the group of students who plan and implement our campaign's nationwide advocacy efforts. Elected by SGACers for one-year terms, SC members deal with the day to day operation of the campaign. They are devided among several coordinator positions:

Chapter Development Coordinator
Caiti at fightglobalaids.org

Starting a new chapter or trying to build one up? Having trouble recruiting new members? Got people but they aren't taking on responsibility? Not sure how to run an effective meeting? Wish someone could just support you with your chapter? Then contact Caiti, especially if you have a college chapter. High school chapters should feel free to contact Caiti but should also see below.

High School Coordinator
michael.henrich at fightglobalaids.org

We know that running a high school chapter can be quite different than running a college chapter, so Michael is here for you! As a high school student, Michael has first-hand experience with the variety of questions, concerns, and issues that high school students face.

Grassroots Action Coordinator
chris.platano at fightglobalaids.org

Want to get your Senator or Representative on board with SGAC's demands but don't know what to do? Are really excited about debt cancellation (or any other issue) but can't figure out how to translate interest into action? Just don't get the legislative process? Then Chris is here for you!

Media Coordinator
catherine.bryant at fightglobalaids.org

Irked by an article in your local paper and want to write a letter to the editor but don't know how? Need media coverage for an event your chapter is doing? About to be interviewed by your campus paper and want some pointers? Then Catherine is the person for you!

Partnerships Coordinator
adeel.chaudhry at fightglobalaids.org

Have friends in another country who want to partner up with SGAC? Want your chapter to develop a relationship with a youth group in another country? Know of a great youth organization somewhere else in the world? Then you'd better contact Adeel!

Communications and Technology Coordinator
david.norton at fightglobalaids.org

Interested in doing online organizing, starting a website, or having your chapter's work (and pictures!) featured on SGAC's site? Have an announcement for the newsletter? Let David know!

Policy Coordinator
rachel.gray at fightglobalaids.org

Want to get the facts on all that complicated policy? Confused by the legislative process? Get more involved on the policy side of things! Email Rachel!

National Student Coordinator
Will at fightglobalaids.org

Have a brilliant idea for something brand new that SGAC should do? Wonder about some of the intricate details of how SGAC works? Want to give kudos to the organization? Then Will is waiting to hear from you!

Regional Organizers
alexis.regan at fightglobalaids.org or angela.bingham at fightglobalaids.org or jamarious.nickerson at fightglobalaids.org or jeremy.crowe at fightglobalaids.org or madeleine.amdur at fightglobalaids.org

Trying to find other chapters in your area to work with on actions? Looking to get your school more plugged-in to the national network? We're here for you: Alexis (New England), Angela (West), Jamarious (Mid-Atlantic), Jeremy (Southeast), and Madeleine (Midwest).

Steering Committee Elections

Steering Committee elections are held at the end of each academic year (April) to elect the Steering Committee for the next year.

SC members are elected to one year terms that start in June. Any member of an SGAC chapter or affiliate group may run for the Steering Committee if s/he has not previously served on it.

If a SC member has to or chooses to step down from her/his position after a semester, an election will be held at the end of the semester (November) for his or her replacement.

Decision-Making in SGAC

The Steering Committee serves as the primary decision-making body for SGAC. The SC does this not as an effort to take decisions out of the chapters’ hands but so as not to overburden chapter leaders with the daily decisions that come with being a national organization. The Steering Committee and the staff are committed to engaging chapters on all major campaign decisions. The information below is intended to outline how different types of decisions are made in SGAC.

By all members of SGAC:
*Changes to the mission, vision, or platform of SGAC
*Adoption of a constitution and/or bylaws
*Significant change to leadership structure (abolition of the Steering Committee, major change in Global Justice Board of Directors structure, etc.)

By the Steering Committee with feedback from members:
*Entering new territory for the campaign (adoption of a domestic HIV/AIDS campaign, etc.)
*Co-sponsoring major events and actions that require a significant financial or turnout commitment by SGAC
*Sign-on letters that are not clearly a part of our platform

By the Steering Committee:
*Sign-on letters that are part of our platform
*Joining coalitions/partnerships that are within our platform
*Changes to steering committee structure (adding a position, like the grassroots fundraiser)
*Big team decisions (adding a new international partner, pursuing state coalitions, etc.

By staff or by the Steering Committee:
*Day-to-day business (which meetings to attend, what to work on, etc.)
