On Friday, April 28th, SGACers in Chicago and from across the US were joined in actions by people living with AIDS, doctors, medical students, and activists both in the US and in Tanzania, Nigeria, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.

SGAC, Allies in Chicago Meet With Abbott Officials
On Monday, representatives of the Student Global AIDS Campaign along with several doctors, medical students, representatives of the AIDS Foundation Chicago, and a community AIDS activist all met with officials from Abbott Laboratories in Chicago. We feel that this meeting was useful. While Abbott’s responses were moving in the right direction, the company still has a long way to go in making Kaletra truly available and affordable—steps the company could take immediately but has yet to commit to.

SGAC in DC Asks Abbott to Fill Giant Pill Bottle
SGACers from the George Washington University and the University of Maryland brought a huge pill bottle to the Abbott Laboratories offices in downtown Washington, DC Wednesday, to demand that the pharmaceutical company register its new version of Kaletra throughout the Global South, and that it provide either lower prices or open licenses in middle-income countries.

Student Stop AIDS Campaign in UK Joins the Fight
From Fionnuala Murphy, Student Stop AIDS Coordinator, UK: Student Stop AIDS is a UK based network of young people, campaigning for a stepped up response to the Global AIDS pandemic. We have societies at 25 universities nationwide, and work closely with other youth and student organisations. Since the G8 Summit in Scotland last July, we’ve been lobbying UK politicians to ensure they keep the promises they made on access to HIV treatment and care in 2005.
